Here we have put together a group consisting mainly of yakushimanum hybrids (May flowering, tough, excellent in pots and tubs) and williamsianum hybrids (April flowering, interesting rounded foliage, and tolerant of almost neutral soils). Most will form neat mounded plants between 75-125cm in 10 years.

(H4)  Blush white with prominent reddish purple spotting.  Hardy, broadly bell shaped flowers in dense trusses.  April.  Dark narrow pointed leaves with light buff felt underneath.  Height 80-100 cm.

(H4)  Wavy edged rosy purple flowers with a lighter centre in May.  Attractive dark shiny leaves. One of the darkest yakushimanum hybrids of this shade.  Height 90-120 cm.   

Bow Bells  AGM        (williamsianum hybrid)
(H4)  Deep pink buds open to delightful pink bells.  Free flowering in April - May.  Attractive williamsianum type.  Rounded leaves with reddish-bronze new growth.  Height 80-100 cm.  

Cowslip  (williamsianum hybrid)
(H4)  Bell-shaped flowers of pale primose yellow to cream with pinky red markings in loose trusses.  April.  Rounded leaves on a compact plant.  Best with some shelter.  Height 80-120 cm.

(H4)  Trusses of light pink frilled flowers with darker margins fading to creamy white on a compact hardy plant.  May.  One of the 'Seven Dwarfs' series.  Height 80-100 cm.

(H4)  A deep red yakushimanum hybrid with long-lasting flowers with dark spots in upright firm trusses.  Late May and early June.  Good compact habit, dense foliage.  One of the 'Seven Dwarfs' series.  Height 80-100 cm.

(H4)  Attractive pale pink flowers with darker edges.  May.  Stiff green leaves with pale undersides. Excellent compact habit.  Height 80-100 cm.

Elizabeth (Red Leaf form)
(H4)  Large scarlet trumpet shaped flowers in April.  This form features burgundy red leaves especially on new growth through the summer and a more upright habit.  Height 90-120 cm.

(H4)  Red flowers with paler centre fading to an attractive pink.  May.  An excellent yakushimanum hybrid.  Dark foliage, woolly indumentum below.  Height 100-140 cm.

(H4) NEW Clear pink flowers in a good truss with a prominent dark, crimson-red blotch. May. One of the best blotched yak. hybrids. Height 80-120 cm.

(H4)  Salmon-pink buds open to soft pale yellow faintly spotted deeper yellow in a compact truss.  May - June.  A very compact spreading plant.  Height 80-100 cm.

(H4)  Orange buds open to cream flowers with pink edging and spotting in late May. The most compact of the 'Seven Dwarfs' series, with excellent foliage and woolly indumentum.  Height 80 cm.

(H4)  Very frilled lilac-pink flowers forming a spectacular truss which fades gently through to white.  May - June. The largest of the 'Seven Dwarfs' series (should have been called Happy, but the name was already in use).  Height 100-140 cm.

(H4)  One of the best yak hybrids.  Very attractive frilled pale pink flowers fading to near white in May.  Dark green leaves with indumentum and silvery new growth.  Height 80-100 cm.

(H4)  Frilled rose-pink bell shaped flowers in upright truss.  May. Dense habit and pale-green egg-shaped leaves.  Best in a sunny position.  Height 80-100 cm.

(H4)  Red buds open to rose pink flowers with paler centres and star-shaped white lines.  May.  A plant that buds up young and is neat growing.  Another of Hachmann’s tough plants.  Height 80-120 cm.

(H3-4) Clear pink bell-shaped flowers with deeper edges and currant red spotting.  Early May.  An excellent hybrid with rounded leaves on a compact bush.  Height 80-140 cm.

(H4)  Showy peach pink and cream flowers fading to creamy white in May.  Larger growing than most yakushimanums, and very floriferous.  One of the most popular rhododendrons available. Height 100-140 cm.

(H4)  Rose pink flowers with paler throat and crimson spots fading almost to white.  May.  An excellent floriferous and compact yakushimanum hybrid.  Height 80-100 cm.

(H4)  Attractive clear-pink flowers with a deeper edging.  April.   A particularly good and hardy williamsianum hybrid from Hobbie's in Germany with deep green rounded foliage.  Height 80-100 cm.   

Surrey Heath  AGM                (yak. hybrid)
(H4) Rose-pink flowers with orange spotting and creamy centre.  Fades, giving two-tone effect.  May.  Distinctive with long narrow-pointed leaves.  Height 80-100 cm.

Tibet               (williamsianum hybrid)
(H3-4)  Compact neat growing plant with pink buds opening into pure white bell-shaped flowers.  April.  Attractive rounded foliage with deep-green leaves.  Height 80-100 cm.  

Tidbit
(H3-4)  Cherry red buds open to orangey-yellow well textured flowers with red throats.  Late May.  Good dark foliage with shiny pointed leaves on a compact plant.  Height 80-100 cm.
