This section is for all the hybrids and species which have small leaves, but grow into plants which are taller than dwarfs. It consists mainly of cinnabarina and triflora types which grow to 75-150cm in 10 years, often with an upright habit, and have multiple bell-shaped flowers. These plants are wonderful for softening the planting scheme of a garden, and help to break up the sometimes heavy foliage appearance created by hardy hybrids.

(H3-4) Pale greenish yellow flowers, with darker spotting. A useful early flowering plant for March and April. Mounded twiggy habit with reddish winter foliage. Height 80-100 cm. 

Cilpinense  AGM
(H4)  Comparatively large pale pink opening to white bell flowers with darker anthers. Exceptionally free flowering in February-March when all the foliage is hidden.  Height 50-75 cm.  

Dora Amateis  AGM
(H4)  Very pale pink buds open to pure white flowers with pink markings.  Very free flowering in April.  Compact grower with paleish green leaves.  Height 60-80 cm.  Best in sunny position.

Ilam Violet
(H4) Deep violet blue flowers in large clusters. April-May. Reddish young foliage turns bronzy in winter. Compact upright habit. Best in light shade and needs well drained conditions. Height 80-100 cm.

Penheale Blue  AGM
(H4)  Bright violet blue flowers flushed red in April.  Pale green new growth turning to glossy dark leaves which are reddish-bronze in winter on a compact upright plant.  Height 100-120 cm. 

Pink Gin
(H3-4)  Very attractive and unusual cinnabarinum hybrid.  Apricot-pink tubular bell shaped flowers, freely produced in May.  Good blue-green foliage.  Raised by Ted Millais to suit colder gardens.  Height 100-120 cm. 

Praecox  AGM
(H4)  Rosy lilac flowers to welcome the spring.  February - March.  Buds open well if cut for early indoor decoration. Dark green shiny leaves.  Upright habit, looks best when pruned.  Height 80-100 cm. 

ambiguum
(TRIFLORA  H4)  Pale greenish yellow wide funnel shaped flowers with darker yellow spots.  April.  A close growing shrub with a bushy upright habit from Sichuan.  Height 100-120 cm.   
ambiguum 'Jane Banks'  AM  Primrose yellow semi-double flowers with greenish spots.  

augustinii
(TRIFLORA  H3-4)  A most beautiful upright bushy shrub with flowers varying from pale lavender to deep violet blue, often with green or brown spots.  April - May.  Extra protection is required for the first two winters. Sichuan, Yunnan.  Height 140-160 cm.
