(H4) Characterful and small, 25mm funnel shaped red flowers with deep red anthers forming a domed truss in early May. The leaves are glossy and mid green, on a dome shaped plant. Height 50-75cm in 10 years.
This is one of the original 'Wilson's 50' azaleas, Wilson no,42, collected in Japan by Ernest Wilson in 1917 and introduced to England as 'Red Hussar'. The Wilson 50 azaleas are not as tough as the newer varieties, but this one has proved one of the hardiest.
