Evergreen Azalea Peppina
(H5) Attractive mauve-violet flowers with prominent wine red blotch and speckles on the upper lobes. The flowers are about 55mm wide and the edges are recurved backwards which displays the markings well. Very floriferous in late May. It's from Hachmann's in Northern Germany, so it's very hardy. This is a rare old variety, but one we get asked for quite regularly as it is now so unusual. It was introduced to the UK in 1850 by Robert Fortune from Shanghai, but believed to have originated in Japan. It has small reddish purple hose in hose flowers in May.
